I have the distinct pleasure of serving as the inaugural faculty advisor to the UW Solar Team. Founded in Fall'23 by first-year MechE student, Hai Lin Truman, the team has already created and raced their first car, which placed sixth at the 2025 Formula Sun Grand Prix earning "Rookie of the Year" (read more here).

The team is now designing and building a new car for the 2026 American Solar Challenge. Before dismantling the old car and reappropriating parts, Hai Lin gave me a goodbye tour and even let me sit in the vehicle (tight for my 6'4" frame but I fit!).
